Peter S. Beagle, acclaimed author of The Last Unicorn and In Calabria, a new unicorn fable, will visit Municipal Library of Prague on his way to Colors of Ostrava festival. Prague unicorn fans can reach Peter S. Beagle on July 19th. For those of you, who can not wait, we have a short interview with the author.
Meeting takes place in Central Library, July 19, 2018, 6:00
Peter S. Beagle, author of the book The last unicorn
Imagine that you are going into the library in which you are scared.
Which was your favorite place and why?
Since I subscribe to no formal religion of any sort, but have always
believed unreservedly in ghosts – as at least two of my novels should
indicate – I'd certainly look forward to getting acquainted with the
myriads of fascinating specters that might haunt a library! I might
be gone for quite a while.
If we ever become friends with a unicorn What kind of
Christmas or birthday present would you recommend to us for it?
And since unicorns live alone, and do not generally seek out the company of
other beings – nor ever recognize human customs and festivals –
I'd say that the best gift for a unicorn would be to spend a day or an
evening with a family of foxes (or otters, or elephants, or any other such
family-oriented creatures. Even unicorns might have something to learn
from such an encounter, and quite possibly cherish long, long afterward.
What do you expect from a visit of the Czech Republic?
My own family are originally from Eastern Europe, and I've been hearing
about the legendary beauty of Prague all my life. I can't
wait to walk those streets at last!
What is your most favorite book or author?
If any one book can be said to have made me a writer and storyteller, it
would have to be Kenneth Grahame's THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. And
if one specific book influenced the writing of THE LAST UNICORN – no one
but the Broadway show writer Stephen Schwartz seems to have noticed this
relationship – it would definitely be James Thurber's THE WHITE
DEER. I'm looking forward to meeting my fans in the Czech Republic
in just a few weeks!
